“It is a tremendous thing, to be in harmony with the music of what happens”
– John Moriarty
“Come Forest Bathing – be in the forest, in nature with someone who can help you switch off and slow down.”
– Client, Wicklow, 2021
What is Forest Bathing?
Forest bathing and forest therapy (or shinrin-yoku) broadly means taking in, with all of one’s senses, the forest atmosphere. Not simply a walk in the woods, it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest.
It was developed in Japan during the 1980s to reduce population stress levels, stress related health issues and deaths by overwork. The Japanese realised that many urban citizens were being cut off from nature and needed to reconnect. Due to it’s success, in 1982 Japan made it a part of its national health program and today there are some 62 Forest Therapy bases across the country that millions pf people visit each year for stress relief, health care and eco-tourism.
Researchers, primarily in Japan and South Korea, have established a growing body of scientific literature on the diverse health benefits. Forest Bathing practice encourages a stronger connection with nature and the self. It is both a wellness practice enhancing vigor, vitality and promoting positive mental health. It is also a preventative practice boosting the immune system, reducing blood pressure, stress levels and improving sleep.
However, the focus is not just on improving our health but also the health of the planet as people will only protect what they understand and love.

“Forest Bathing is something you need without realising it. It is effortless self-care and fun. It is facilitated so gently by Ciara that you are present and relaxed before you realise it. The sensory experience is more than I could imagine and has supported me to attune to myself in the business of adulthood.“
